5IF I HAD ALL THE MONEY I'D SPENT ON DRINK, I'D SPEND IT ON DRINKOct 08, 2010
By Kerry Leimer
I've tried many different shakers: they either drool while in action ( in the interest of fairness on this point of "drooling" you should know that I insist that my Martinis be "bruised") or lock so tight following the gentlest vibrations that a visit to the workshop is requir'd to prise the shaker open with such violence that too often my wee dram of Hendrick's winds up all over the counter, irretrievable amid the diluting effects of the sprawling ice flows. Not so with this Alessi. Polished or satin finish, this finely wrought and highly civilized instrument adds to the enchantment and plaisir of the Cocktail Hour, replacing unwanted wetness and mumbled frustration with a cool, generous and satisfying oblivion. Shall we again to the bar?

5Best Cocktail ShakerOct 25, 2009

This shaker feels good to hold, and is so well engineered that it never leaks no matter how long I shake it, then opens with with an easy twist. Perfect precision. Worth the high price tag.

5Nice, substantial cocktail shakerApr 07, 2008

A bit pricey, but very substantial. Timeless design and well made. Easy to open, unlike a lot of cocktail shakers.

4Pricey, but goodJan 07, 2012

First off, I love many Alessi products, so I'm a bit biased. This one may or may not appeal to you on an aesthetic level, but I find it very cool and spacey looking, so the look works for me.

The price may make you choke, but you are paying for Italian design, steel, and high labor costs, so, well, that's just how it is with a lot of stuff from there. If money isn't so much of an object, than great. But if you are looking for some sort of functional benefit that you'll get for the extra cost, well, no, you won't really get that, unless of course every other shaker out there is hard to use and leaks, etc.

This one just works, plain and simple. The two top pieces are quite different, with the center piece/strainer all steel, that neatly and snugly seats to the shaker, and comes off with a fairly effortless twist and lift. Shake away - once it is on, it doesn't seem to ever leak in the seam with the shaker. The cap has a different type of material inside, and it seats with a slightly different feel, but this is so that when you go to take that top off, you don't also take the strainer off. The little depression you see in the pic on front is where i like to put my thumb when I remove the top - there is another depression on the other side of the top, and that is where I put my middle finger. It gives you an easy way to hold the shaker with one hand and remove the top with the other. I suppose there are many ways the top can be removed, depending on your preference, but this seems the most natural and how it was designed.

The strainer has fairly small holes, slightly more than 2mm in diameter. There are 19 holes - one in the center, then 6 surrounding in a circle, then 12 surrounding in another circle. I've found that this slightly limits the flow out when pouring a drink, but it makes the process last a little longer and is more elegant.

Anyway, probably best I stop typing and just go make another cocktail. :)

2Looks good, can't tell you about the functionAug 26, 2011

We generally try to get the best reviewed items as we live overseas and returning items is expensive and generally not possible.

I'm sure this item is very good when it arrives in perfect condition, but in our case this has turned out to be a very expensive mistake. Beautiful looking cocktail shaker, but arrived impossible to open. The top looks a little bit off-kilter so I'm assuming that it wasn't screwed on correctly at the factory, but bloody hell it's stubborn. Haven't found a single person with the ability to open it.

Lesson learned. Buy cheap. Then when it arrives broken, there's no qualms about just throwing the thing away. This is still sitting on our shelf as we're loath to trash it due to the price.

Two stars because it is lovely and it's definitely a solid piece... just a bit too solid, oddly enough. If we ever manage to get the darned thing open, I'll edit to review how it functions.
