4Excellent lens, but Rivet Hinge is a big FlawApr 29, 2011
By Maximzodal
This is an excellent lens that I've used for rock and mineral specimens and anything else that needed magnification. It hasn't changed in almost 45 years. The only con is the rivet hinge. Mine came loose shortly after purchase, and I've never been able to fix it. Nevertheless, I've carried it for years though it opens far too easily, and is always in danger of getting scratched in my pocket. A case for it would be nice.

5hand lens for geology workFeb 15, 2010
By Geodude "ZM"
This is a great little hand lens for anything that requires 10X magnification for viewing. I use this hand lens mainly for looking at hand samples in the field and the lab/classroom. Compared to the old $5 hand lens that I had previously, the Bausch and Lomb has a much clearer field of view and does not hurt my eyes. The old lens would focus in the center of the lens, yet remain blurry around the edges. The B&L has a very clear view across the whole lens that will not strain your eyes. Overall, I think that the B&L is a great choice for viewing rock/sediment samples or any other 10X work. It appears to be well constructed; I have yet to have any problems. The casing around the lens is plastic. The hand lens is held together by a rivet which will not loosen like a screw. However, I sometimes wonder if it did loosen somehow, then there would be no way for me to tighten it back up...I have yet to have this problem though. One last plus is the hole to connect the hand lens to a lanyard. This is very important for me because I use the lens in the field and between use I am often hiking around, so it is handy to have it on command around my neck. As far as the price goes, it is high. On the order of [...] bucks or so. If it said made in the USA on the side it would be alright, but it doesn't; I'm not sure where they are made. Luckily for me I received this hand lens as a Valentine's gift!

2I am not happy with it. Overpriced.Oct 08, 2011
By KLee
The lens is so small. I don't think it's even dime-sized. I bought it at the recommendation of a Bausch and Lomb Hastings triplet yadda yadda of my professor, and I was really disappointed when it arrived. I paid too much!
Friends in class bought other lenses with the same magnification, same manufacturer even, cheaper, larger, ones which came with a lanyard and a pouch..
This ones *tiny*, it's got a bag (yay..), no lanyard. It's not useful... you can't really see anything in the small field of view..
I'm going to look for something else.

5Handy magnifier for field useJan 08, 2011
By DayTexas
I wear this magnifier on a lanyard around my neck whenever I'm out hiking (the magnifier is small so it's never a bother to carry along). Great for examining in detail all the interesting things one finds in the field; shells on the beach, plants, rock and mineral specimens in the mountains.

4Good Quality LensOct 05, 2011
By Prepostasaurus
I needed to get a hand lens for a Geology class that I was taking. This type of lens was recommended by my teacher. I like it a lot and it is a very high quality lens. The only thing I was disappointed about was the diameter. I thought the lens was going to be a lot bigger but it was actually really small. I'm not completely dissatisfied as it is a very high-end product, I just wish I had known the size when I bought it. It'd be great if they put the diameter of the lens somewhere on the seller's page. If that information was already there I couldn't find it, so maybe put it in the title of the product or something.
