4Nice compact guidebookJun 06, 2009
By P. Yocum
I found this book very helpful during my time in London. The book is split up into different neighborhoods, and within each neighborhood there are the following subgroups: See, Shop, Eat, Drink, Play. At the beginning of each section, there is a map of the neighborhood with all of the shops, restaurants, and attractions on it so you can easily figure out your itinerary for the day. The book also includes a folded map that you can pull out. While I found this larger map helpful, I ended up losing it after a few days and had to buy a replacement (oops). I think I actually could have done without the larger map--the small maps inside the book provide enough detail to figure out how to get where you want to go.

Pros: Small size, easy to carry around. Great maps and well organized sections that make it easy to plan what you want to do. Lots of "hip" shops (I mostly used it for the shopping recommendations). Descriptions include info about price of admission, business hours, nearest tube stop, phone number, web site, and street address (everything you need to know!), along with a brief review of what you can expect to find there.

Cons: I found that a few of the shops listed were not very accurately represented (i.e. they sounded great in the description but were quite disappointing). This could, of course, be attributed to taste, but I felt a little misled with a few of the descriptions.

Overall, however, this is a great book with lots of useful information, and thanks to this book I visited a lot of neat places that I probably wouldn't have found otherwise.

5Solid Pocket GuideSep 19, 2011

This nicely practical guide is your ticket to the great city of London. Divided into three main sections, the book is readable, informative, and easy-to-use. The first section provides a brief look at London highlights like the British Museum, Westminster, the Tower of London, etc. Then the main section contains concise chapters on various neighborhoods like Soho, Notting Hill, South Bank, etc. Each neighborhood chapter contains a useful street map (showing subway/underground stations), and lists things to do under the subtitles SEE, SHOP, EAT, DRINK, and PLAY. The latter section provides useful information on the city's excellent public transportation (no need for taxi's), theater, accomodations, etc. There is even a nice pullout city map. I'd like more information on hotels (the section is fairly brief) and as the book was published in 2009, at least one listed restaurant (Vama) has since closed. Still, this is an easy reading and useful guide.

London is an expensive city, but these pages can help you enjoy it on a budget. Also, at a trim 4 X 7 inches, this guide fits easily into purses, pouches, and pant pockets. This is a solid choice for budget and other travelers.
