Was a real lifesaver!!Sep 06, 2010
The reduce power feature was a real lifesaver for me!! We were lost in an underground mine near the Polish Kaliningrad border looking for the Amber Room stolen by the Nazis in WWII. So I reduced the power to minimum & we still had light for almost 24 hours. Luckily it didn't take that long to find our way back out another entrance than we came in. But if the light had failed...

Decent little light. The "candle mode" sold me. We have frequent power outages and these Mag 2nd generation leds are just the ticket. I own a number of the more powerful new Cree leds light that deliver 100 - 200 lumens. But they all need the weird CR type batteries which are expensive. For emergencies AA type batteries are preferable being cheap and readily available.
In the low power mode with 2 fresh batteries, this light will last about a week. See Gail Rhea's review this page (thank you Gail). Calms the kids.

In the candle mode, the bare led is uncomfortably bright, so mount them at least 6' - 7' above the ground.
The clips are not Decorator approved. but they work. A handy hubby could come up with something more pleasing to the eye.
So tack these to your wall and your family will be happy during the next black out. Throw one in the car glove box too. 4 stars instead of 5 because the "focusing" feature is silly now with leds, but Maglite stays with the familiar making the light more awkward to switch modes.
I bought 8. Buy it. you will be happy.

Purchased this small LED flashlight to try out for an all around toolbox, glovebox, field inspection light. I currently own two original 2D cell maglites and they are excellent, both 5-6 years old and great shape. I purchased the genuine Maglite LED upgrade kit for both of them and am very satisfied. Have had the same D batteries in them for 1-2 years and they are still putting out great light, so excellent battery life.
For the small 2AA light, first the PROS: the aluminum housing is solid, same quality as older maglites; the led light is actually brighter than my 2D led maglites and i actually prefer the 2AA light as it is whiter, and if the controls worked well i would buy more of them; the size is perfect.
For the CONS: the controls make this a very annoying product; the twist on/off is fine, but one small bump or a small twist of the front and it shifts from high to low or to flashing mode. Twist control fine, but when you pick 100% on it should stay that way unless you intentionally change it, not changing with a mild touch. When inspecting a building with colleagues the last thing I want is a flashlight to start flashing like poltergeist. I personally would prefer just on/off, or on 100%/on 50%/off. The flashing light and SOS mode for me are unneeded; the 25% mode is too dim to be useful, i'd recommend 100%/50%; nextly, the end battery cap doesn't stay on tightly. My old maglites have to turn hard to tighten and they stay that way. This battery cap loosens easily and then actually switches the mode (100% to 25% to flashing) when it is loose; lastly, i do miss the on/off switch found on the 2D lights.
FINAL WORD: Frame quality, great. Brightness, great. Just need the old Maglite rock solid on/off controls.
USER TIP: I actually put some white teflon plumbers tape inside the threads of the battery cap and it stays much tighter. I also put teflon on the inside on/off threads and it is harder to twist, so it doesn't switch modes by itself so easily. Not sure how long it will last but worth a try.

I used to have an incandescent mini maglite, and I really liked it. When I lost it, I thought I'd upgrade to an LED version. I was disappointed. As far as brightness goes, there doesn't seem to be a great difference between my old maglite using NiMH batteries and the LED maglite with alkalines. The beam is more uniform in the LED version, but I find the bluish tint to be harder to see in than the reddish incandescent light. My main complaint, though, is that the LED version didn't work properly with my NiMH batteries. It produced a very dim, barely visible light with one set of older, fully charged NiMH batteries I had. When I tried a higher capacity, fully charged set, it didn't produce any light at all. I'm returning this version and getting an incandescent version instead.
