4Great butane iron for the priceMay 28, 2008
By J. Cotton
For anyone who owned or used the original Portasol soldering iron, they will notice some vast improvements to this second design. Primarily, ignition no longer requires a "bic-lighter-type-spark" (that usually required at least three efforts), as it has been replaced by a piezo-electric spark. In addition, the gas supply seems much more stable and controllable, and finally, the soldering tips are much more robust and use the same mounting device for easy switching (though one must still wait for those parts to cool down before handling). Overall, the tool is well-built and very quick to achieve soldering temperatures. The only negatives I see are the relatively short run-time per tank of gas (about 45 mins on a low setting - less than they claim), and the absence of a temperature gauge, or series of led lights to roughly indicate temp. I don't think this feature is present on other, even more expensive portable units, but it would be a nice addition to ensure that expensive electronic components (esp high power LEDs) don't get fried.

This is the best butane soldering pencil I have used. And I have used a lot....
great temp control and the ignition has never gone out.
I am on my second one because my other one "left me" at a job site...

If you are a field tech save your money and get the one without the case. It is bulky and I never used it.
It is sturdy enough to throw in your tool bag.

5Excellent deviceAug 12, 2009
By P. Powers
Just taken delivery of this excellent item. I had been faced with restoration of an Edwardian stained glass door panel where the existing solder would not melt using today's Weller 100W electric irons. I bought the above because of its higher temperatures and it does the job. Still not desperately quick but better than risking glass breakage from cutting and prising. The iron is simplicity to fill, start and use - but start it on full gas flow - and it works excellently. One thing though, at max temp if you press too hard the tip will bend because it is so hot! So far so good.

5Great iron!May 03, 2010
By Karen Wilson
I got this for my boyfriend for Christmas for our pipe organ business. He would always plug in a a/c iron and wait 5 minutes or so, then use it. Then after use, we'd sling it over something to cool off - trying to remember to take it home with us! You can't stick a hot iron back in the tool box! But that was if a plug was nearby or we had an extension. Often I'd have to hand the old iron over to him, then he'd hand it back and I'd plug it back in to keep it hot.

Well no more!

Since I gave it to him, it's been like a dream to solder with. It lights super easy with its build-in piezoelectric element, and it gets hot FAST! Plus, when we're done with it, we can simply put the cap back on this iron and drop it back in the tool box! No waiting around for it to cool off!

And to top that off, since I got it for him back in December I filled it up then; he's only had to top it off once! An amazing tool. Weller has finally done it. A portable easy to use quick draw iron that lives up to it's promise! (unlike the Weller battery powered irons I've tried in the past that were junk)

Well done!

The only addition I would make would be to make the cap of the iron fit into the back end of the iron like a marks-a-lot marker so it would always be right there. But that's not a complaint - just a feature request to perfect this tool.
